Puget Sound Corporate Soccer Challenge LogosThe annual Boeing vs. Microsoft soccer friendly match, which began in 1997, has evolved into a community tradition. For a decade, the two companies faced off before a Seattle Sounders home match at various local venues, including Seattle’s Memorial Stadium, Starfire Soccer Complex and Qwest Field. In 2008, the Puget Sound Corporate Soccer Challenge formalized to expand the scope of the event to include more Northwest corporations and make it a philanthropic effort to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western Washington and Alaska. In 2009, the Mack Marketing agency was commissioned to up-level the event timed with the region’s excitement for the Seattle Sounders FC debut in Major League Soccer (MLS).

The Plan

Mack Marketing developed an event and public relations plan with several key objectives and concepts in mind. Participants were a unique breed - community-minded employees of Fortune 500 companies with a passion for the sport of soccer, and in many cases, an equal fascination with the newly-formed MLS franchise in Seattle. Connecting communications and community-relations personnel to the soccer players within their own corporations was a critical success factor. Accordingly, Mack Marketing built two distinct experiences in support of the stated objectives.

The Feedback

Expedia has a large population of soccer enthusiasts and Sounders season ticket holders, so we were thrilled that the Sounders hosted the match at Qwest Field. The PSCSC was great because it engaged everyone from Expedia's CEO to our employees and their family and friends. Expedia would love to be invited to play again.

Starbucks had a great time and we’re all in again for 2010. Our players are talking this afternoon and evening about how great it feels to participate and to help such a valuable community organization.
